On this day in history, “Episcopal minister Dudley Tyne, burdened for the salvation of husbands and fathers, speaks to a rally of 5,000 men in Philadelphia. ‘I would rather this right arm were amputated at the trunk than that I should come short of my duty to you in delivering God’s message,’ he said. Over 1,000 men were converted.” [1]

Tyne preached at a rally as part of the ‘Fourth Great Awakening’ from 1857-1858 where revival rallies saw tens of thousands of Americans commit to following Christ. [2]

Both ironically and tragically “two weeks later, Tyne lost his right arm in a farming accident, and he died soon after. His last words, ‘Stand up for Jesus, father, and tell my brethren of the ministry to stand up for Jesus,’ inspired the hymn ‘Stand Up, Stand Up for Jesus.’”

His last breath was to continue to give “God’s message.” The lyrics of the song are below. As you read them, let the Holy Spirit give you a burden for salvation like Tyne’s and show you how to ‘Stand Up, Stand For Jesus’ with similar boldness, conviction, and faith.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,

Ye soldiers of the cross;

Lift high his royal banner,

It must not suffer loss.

From victory unto victory

His army shall he lead,

Till every foe is vanquished,

And Christ is Lord indeed.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,

Stand in his strength alone;

The arm of flesh will fail you,

Ye dare not trust your own.

Put on the gospel armor,

Each piece put on with prayer;

Where duty calls or danger,

Be never wanting there.

Stand up, stand up for Jesus,

The strife will not be long;

This day the noise of battle,

The next the victor’s song.

To those who vanquish evil

A crown of life shall be;

They with the King of Glory

Shall reign eternally [3]
